"Runflats" new high tech tires that eliminate the good old spare tire are quietly being introduced. Runflats are tires with a "synthetic rubber insert in the tire's sidewall that makes it stiff enough to support the tire temporarily even when it loses all its air" as described by the Los Angeles Times.

It adds extra storage, reduces weight, saves fuel, and for some provides a "sense of security". Currently being introduced in sport cars and luxury models and cost 20% more and give a stiffer ride so in the 5 to 10 year projective growth "engineers will need to alter suspension designs to handle runflats."

Even when deflated the ride is so smooth, your car will have to warn you your tire is "technically" flat and must be fixed. So the great thing is that if you get a flat "out in the middle of nowhere" you can just keep on driving until you can get the tire safely fixed!
